NEXT MEETING April 17th

The next Math Energy meeting will take place on April 17th. Registration will take place in the Alumni Lounge in the MLK Union at 7:30AM. This meeting is different because it actually a conference. The 55th Annual Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics Innovations to be exact.

The Schedule for the conference is as follows:

• Registration — 7:30am  (Alumni Lounge)
• Session 1  – 8:30am (Third Floor, East Wing)
• Break — 9:30am
• Session 2 — 9:40am (Third Floor, East Wing)
• Break — 10:40am
• Session 3 — 10:50am (Third Floor, East Wing)
• Luncheon and Keynote Address — Noon (Grand Ballroom)

Math Energy has been asked  for volunteers to help escort guests around the MLK union. If anyone is interested please contact Dr. Andrew M. White at amwhite@eiu.edu before April 16th.

Feel free to join us in Old Main room 3010 on April 23rd at 7pm for Pizza and Drinks to find out about the positions and apply. Positions that are available for Fall are Treasurer, Fundraising, Tutoring, and Membership.

I hope that everyone had a GREAT Spring Break!! Attached are the pictures from the previous meeting. The topic included working with Fractals in the school environment. The pictures are of Eastern Illinois math professors helping students create different Fractal cut outs and drawings.

Final Meeting of the Semester

Tonight will be the final meeting of the semester.

We will be graced with a presentation from Rena Pate tonight at 7pm in the University Ballroom located in the Union.

At the meeting we will also be accepting applications for any vacant seats in the Spring 2012 Executive Board.

Our second meeting of the semester will be on Monday, October 17th at 7:00 pm in the University Ballroom.

We are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Math Energy. Come meet some of the people who have made Math Energy the vibrant organization it has become, enjoy some fun math activities, and have some birthday cake!

Please arrive early, registration begins at 6:30 pm. Math Energy dues are $6 per semester. Information about becoming a member can be found here.

Remember that Math Energy is considered a Professional Organization by Eastern Illinois University. Attendance verification will be available for Math Energy members.

Oh the Places You Will Go!

“Using Math Manipulatives and Games as a bridge to Learning”

Last mondays guest speaker was Barbara Jo Evans, an Education Consultant for ETA Cuisenaire. Barbara spoke of using math manipulatives as an innovative way to teach math using shapes, games, and technology. Some of these methods were versatiles, snap cubs,  and the “Happy Meal“.
